fccix had been ftrongly recommended to him, on hh engaging under theftandard of Love ; and, befides, affure him that by thefe means more might have been obtained by him from the lady of his heart in one hour, than he could have imagined or even wifhed. Pleafure, after this ufeful advice, farisfies his curiofity to know what were her functions with the God of Love. The principal, ihe faid, çonfifted in fupporting his power, by the reciprocal charms which ihe conferred on two perfons in love with eaich other, whence comes the proverbial fay* ing, no ugly lover nor ill-favoured miftrels. He then conjures her by all the credit ihe may be fop* pofed to have in the Court of Love, to exert herfelf that the lady to whom he had paid his homage ihould become lefs cruel. Hope, into whofe hands Pleafure transfers him, demands if he is not jealous, which ihe calls the çurfe of lovers, and promifes to cure him of this diforder, provided he would never loie fight of her. At length the two ladies condud him by the hand to the park where Love refided, and on the road afk him for fome ballads and virelais of his compofition^ which they fing with him. . They meet near a hill douxpenfer, gentil, damoi fiau, holding two greyhounds in a leafh, who points out to them thé place where they would find the God they are in fe^rch of.
