When we were clofe to it, and thought of enter* ing it by the bridge over the Garonne, we found it impoffible ; for the preceding day it had rain-ed fo heavily in the mountains of Catalonia and Arragon, that a river, called the Saluz, which rifes among them, and falls into the Garonne with great rapidity, was fo much fwelled as to carry away one of the arches of the bridge, which was of wood. We were therefore forced to return to Montefquieu to dinner, and remain there the whole day. On the morrow, the knight was advifed to crofs the Garonne, oppoiite the town of Cafferes in m boat; we therefore rode thither, and by our ex-ertions the horfes pafled, and we ourfelves after-wards with fome difficulty and danger; for the boat was fo fmall that only two horfes and their men could crofs at a time with thofe who manag-ed the boat. When we had croffed, we made for Cafferes, where we ftaid the whole day. While our fervants were preparing the fupper, fir Ef-paign du Lyon faid, c Sir John, let us go and fee the town/ f Come then,' replied I. We walked through the town to a gate which opens towards Palaminich, and, having paffed it, went near the ditches. The knight, pointing to the walls, faid, c Do you obferve that part of the walls ?* 4 Yes, fif : why do you afk?' * I will tell you : becaufe it is newer than the reft.' ' That is true,' anftver-ed I. •c 1 will relate to you how this happened ten years ago. You have heard of the wars between the count .d'Armagnac and the count de Foix, which took place in the country of Beam, that appertains. 140
