This proclamation foften-ed the minds of the people: and the admiral took every debt on himfelf, declaring, he would never leave the country until every thing were completely paid and fatisfied. Upon this many knights and fquires obtained a paflage to France, and returned through Flan-ders, or wherever they could land, famifhed, ancl without arms or horfes, curling Scotland, and the hour they had fet foot there. They faid they had never fuffered fo much in any expedi-tion, and wiftied the king of France would make a truce with the Englifh for two or three years, and then march to ScoUand and utterly deftroy it: for never had they feen fuch wicked people, nor fuch ignorant hypocrites and traitors. The admiral wrote to the king of France and duke of tfurguhdy, by thofe vvho firft returned, a full ftate of his fituation, and Jiow the Scots had acted towards him that if they wiflied to have him back, they muft feud him the full amount he had engaged to pay the Scots, and for which he had bounden himfelf to the knights and fquires of Scotland : for the Scots had de-clared, that they had at this tinie made war for the king of France and not for thcmfelves, and that the'dan\ages which the French liai com-mitted muft be. fatisfied before they would be allowed to return*, which" he had proinifrd a;ul fwom to perform to the barons'of Scotland.
