that the eldeft of his daughters, the lady Mar-garet, who was very handfome, and was like-wife heirefs to the kingdom, fhould be given to -Lewis count de Valois, brother to the king of France, hecaufe they thought he would refide in Hungary, and the king, had he lived, would have followed this advice. • • . After the deceafe of the king of Hungary, ambaffadors were fent to France, to vthe king and his uncles, to notify the wifh of the queen of Hungary to unite the count de Valois with her eldeft daughter. This feemed to the king and the. barons of France as if it was very de-finable, except that it would feparate and place at.too great a diftance the count c|e Valois from his family and the powerful kingdom of France. On the other hand, they confidered it was a grand as well as a profitable offer for the count de Valois to be king of Hungary, • which is one of the greateft realms in Chriftendom. • . The Hungarians fent by the Queen were mag-nificently received, and large prefents were made to them. The bifhop. de Maillerets and John de Perfonne, returned with them as ambassadors from France, who, on their arrival in Hungary, efpoufed by procuration, in the name ' of the count de Valois, the princefs Margaret. John de la Perfonne courteoufly lay on * a bed befide her'a. They then came back to France, and ihewed their letters patent and other public in-ftruments, which gave great fatisfaction to all France ; and the count de Valois fîgned himfelf king ôf Hungary for a long time. \Tou
