They would come to him very op-portunely; for thofe counties, of which he called himfelf lord by virtue of the _ gift made him* abounded in all forts of wealth. He was there-fore ofccupied day and night in deviling means tojperform this journey : he well knew he could never aceomplifh it without a large fum of mo-ney, and a numerous body of tnen at arms to re-fill thofe who might, wifli to oppofe him. The duke, in confequenee* amafled fo great a quantity of moneys under pretence of this journey, that it was marvellous to behold ; and he kept the Parifians in as good humour as he could, for he knew there were in Paris large depofits of cafh, of which he got the greater part, and fent it to the earl of Savoy* in whom he had great con-fidence; adding, that on his arrival in Savoy, he would make arrangements by which there fhould te regular payments for a thoufand fpears, or more, for one whole year. The earl of Savoy was much pleafed at this intelligence, for he greatly loved arms: he there-fore replied to the meffengers, that he would willingly lerve the duke on the terms propofed-This anfwer was highly agreeable to the duke^. as he had an affection for the company of the earl of Savoy. - The duke retained men in all parts, fd that he tad collected full nine thoufànd meû at aims* C 8 . ready
